Simpler Recycling Legislation
changes on the Isle of Wight

Simpler Recycling Legislation

Is your business prepared for the upcoming changes under the new Simpler Recycling legislation? On 21 October 2023, the UK Government introduced these reforms to overhaul waste collections and recycling across England. The goal is to eliminate confusion about what can and cannot be recycled, standardise recycling practices for businesses, schools, and homes, and significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Separating Food Waste

No matter how small the quantity, all businesses must separate food waste for collection. This requirement is vital for reducing environmental impact and ensuring efficient waste management under the Simpler Recycling legislation.

Changes to Landfill Tax Rates

In light of the 2024 Spring Budget, businesses should be aware of significant increases in landfill tax rates starting from April 2025. The standard landfill tax rate will see a rise of over 20%, while the lower rate for inert waste will increase by 22.7%. These changes are designed to encourage businesses and local authorities to reduce their reliance on landfill disposal and to invest more in sustainable waste management practices.

With these higher costs on the horizon, it’s more important than ever for businesses to adopt effective recycling and waste reduction strategies to mitigate the financial impact and contribute to a greener future.

Onward Waste does not directly dispose at landfill sites, and our partners achieve 95% landfill diversion. As a result, these tax increases generally do not affect our customers. However, check with your provider, as these taxes may increase the cost of your waste disposal depending on where your waste is disposed of.

Key Compliance Dates

For Businesses, Hospitals, Schools. In autumn 2024, the government will release the finalised guidance outlining the specific requirements

By 31 March 2025

Businesses with 10 or more employees must

begin separating dry recyclables (such as glass, paper, cardboard, metals, & plastics) into dedicated containers. Food waste must be collected separately, regardless of the quantity produced.
